Rock Candy

What you will need: String, a pencil, a paperclip, 1 cup of water, 2 cups of sugar, a cup or mug, a small saucepan, a wooden spoon, a measuring cup, and an adult to help you.

Instructions:

1.      Tie a 4 inch piece of string to the middle of the pencil.

2.      Attach the paperclip to the end of the string.

3.      Put the pencil across the top of the cup or mug so the string dangles in the cup. The string will act as a wick for the sugar crystals.

4.      Take the pencil and string out of the jar and set them aside (you will put it back in later after you pour the liquid into the jar).

5.      Have an ADULT help you boil the water on the stove.

6.      Once the water begins to boil add the sugar bit by bit until it has all been dissolved and you have used the whole 2 cups of sugar.

7.      Have an ADULT help you pour the sugar solution into your cup or mug. Now put the paper clip back over the cup or mug so the string dangles in the sugar solution.

8.      Set the jar aside and wait.

9. The sugar crystals will take a long time to grow (it can take up to a few weeks!!)  The sugar crystals will attach to the string so when you pull it out in a few weeks you will have yourvery own homemade rock candy!!!
